But you, O LORD, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high. (Psalms 3:3 NLT)
Think of a soldier–an ancient soldier. He would carry a sword or a spear, maybe a bow and arrow, and he would definitely have a shield. His shield would cover him when it rained. He could sleep under it at night. Most importantly he could use it to ward off blows from an enemy sword, to push aside the thrusts of an enemy spear, or to stop the flight of an enemy arrow. The shield was his great protection against his enemies. The Lord Himself is our shield and it is He who protects us and covers us. When the enemy accuses us or condemns us or tries to take away our joy, it is the shield of trust in Jesus that keeps any of that from getting to us. Thank God that He is our shield!
